How It Works: Internet of Things.
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other objects that are embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity, enabling them to collect and exchange data. The IoT allows these devices to be connected and controlled remotely, enabling them to communicate and interact with each other and with other systems.
There are a number of different components that make up the IoT, including:
- Sensors and actuators: These are the devices that are embedded in physical objects and are used to collect data about the object and its environment, as well as to control the object’s behavior. Sensors can measure a wide range of physical and environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, sound, light, and more. Actuators are devices that can be used to control or manipulate the object, such as motors, relays, and valves.
- Connectivity: The IoT relies on a variety of connectivity technologies to enable devices to communicate and exchange data. This may include short-range technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as longer-range technologies such as cellular networks and satellite communications.
- Cloud computing and data storage: The vast amounts of data generated by the IoT are typically stored in the cloud, where they can be accessed and analyzed by a wide range of applications and systems. Cloud computing platforms provide scalable and flexible computing and storage resources that can be used to support the IoT.

Digital Supply Chain Quotes
- “The Internet of Things (IoT) will impact supply chain in so many ways. Either learn about it, or get left behind.” ~EverythingSupplyChain.com.
- “If your current systems are giving you inaccurate reports will investing in big data mean you will still get inaccurate reports but just with more data?” ~SupplyChainToday.com
- “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.” ~ Jonh Steinbeck
- “You want to be extra rigorous about making the best possible thing you can. Find everything that’s wrong with it and fix it. Seek negative feedback, particularly from friends.” ~ Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.
- “The digital supply chain has the potential to completely change supply chain. However, do your due diligence before rushing in.” ~EverythingSupplyChain.com.
- “If you don’t have standardized processes how are you going to provide a consistent way to automate them?” ~SupplyChainToday.com
- “Unfortunately, there seems to be far more opportunity out there than ability…. We should remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation.” ~ Thomas Edison
- “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” ~ Maya Angelou
- “Lets go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday.” ~ Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple.
- “Listen to anyone with an original idea, no matter how absurd it may sound at first. If you put fences around people, you get sheep. Give people the room they need.” ~ William McKnight, 3M President
- “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.” ~ Jonh Steinbeck
- “It is impossible to improve any process until it is standardized. If the process is shifting from here to there, then any improvement will just be one more variation that is occasionally used and mostly ignored. One must standardize, and thus stabilize the process, before continuous improvement can be made.” ~ Masaaki Imai
